Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp disagree over Mesut Ozil as Arsenal are beaten by Tottenham

Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp expressed contrasting opinions on Mesut Ozil during Sunday's north London derby.

The German World Cup-winner has been frozen out of first-team contention by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard choosing to leave Ozil out of his 25-man Premier League squad at the start of the season.

Redknapp opined that his return to the side would aid Arsenal's attacking threat as the Gunners fell to yet another league defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

"Ozil’s not even in the 25, but he’s that one player who can spot a pass," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

"[Dani] Ceballos as well. I get the pros and the cons with Ozil but I think Arsenal fans would rather be in the position with him playing than not."

Goals from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane condemned Arsenal to back-to-back Premier League defeats against their local rivals for the first time in ten years.

Sunday's result also marked the fourth time the Gunners have failed to score in a league match from their last five outings.

Former Manchester United and England defender Neville dismissed Redknapp's suggestion that Ozil could improve things in front of goal for Arteta's side, instead stating his belief that the 32-year-old is not motivated enough to perform at his brilliant best.

“I’m not as clear on that one - in terms of bringing Ozil back - I have to say," Neville replied.

"After watching him for three or four years here, he looked disinterested to me. He had talent, and he definitely had a pass in him, certainly in the final third, his weight of pass was fantastic.”

Arsenal return to Europa League action on Thursday, as they make the relatively short trip to Ireland to face Dundalk in their final Group B fixture.
