Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher slam Liverpool defending as Trent Alexander-Arnold point made

Gary Neville has taken aim at Trent Alexander-Arnold for his role in Arsenal's second goal at the Emirates.

The Gunners had taken the lead after just one minute when Martin Odegaard's pass split the Reds defence open, finding Martinelli who had lost the Liverpool right-back. But Darwin Nunez managed to tuck home Luis Diaz' cross and level the scoreline, with the confidence form the equaliser pushing Jurgen Klopp's side into the ascendancy.

But with Arsenal and Mikel Arteta likely happy to go into the break level, Martinelli broke down the right. Despite being covered by Jordan Henderson, Alexander-Arnold was too eager in trying to help the midfielder out, and when the Brazilian cut inside and crossed, Bukayo Saka was completely free to tap home and give his side the lead.

Neville singled out Alexander-Arnold for an overzealous attempt to cover Henderson and try to guess Martinelli's move, leaving those in the box outnumbered and vulnerable.

"They’ve been struggling for the last 20 minutes of this match, Arsenal, but somehow in the fifth of injury time at the end of the first half they get a counter-attack," Neville said during live commentary on Sky Sports. "It’s not good enough from Thiago, I praised him all the way through the first-half, I have no idea what Trent Alexander-Arnold’s doing here though.

"I have to say, once he goes across there he leaves Tsimikas isolated on his own. Liverpool’s right-back goes across and that’s not good enough. He had to stay in the middle, Henderson was showing him down that line and Saka is stretching for his life. Arteta who would’ve been wanting his side to go in level can get them in 2-1 up now."

Jamie Carragher also weighed in on the injury-time concession of such a soft goal, with the former Reds captain tweeting: "Shocking that, 1 minute to go until half time. Another defensive shambles. #ARSLIV"

Alexander-Arnold was substituted at half time, with Joe Gomez brought on at right-back.
