Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher disagree over Jesse Lingard tackle in Manchester United vs Man City

Manchester United were holding Manchester City at the break in the Manchester Derby.

Raheem Sterling went closest to opening the scoring in a tense first half with the main talking point a tackle by United's Jesse Lingard on Bernardo Silva as the period came to a close.

Lingard appeared to catch the City man on the ankle after first taking the ball however refeere Andre Marriner decided that not to book the United player.

Former United defender Gary Neville thought it was a dangerous challenge and he was surprised that the ref missed the incident.

Neville said on Sky Sports: "I think he does follow through, he gets the ball on the initial challenge. It's a poor challenge from Jesse Lingard.

Gary Neville claims Paul Pogba wants to leave Manchester United - and agent is to blame

"In the follow through, he lifts his foot up and he knows what he is doing.

"Andre Marriner misses that one as does the assistant referee on that side."

However his fellow pundit Jamie Carragher appeared to disagree, asking: "Where can his foot go Gary? I think when you go in with your studs and people say the follow-through but where can you foot go."

Neville explained: "I think we have all been players and we know full well that you can go and pull back. We don't have to go in and follow through.

Carragher hit back: "To make the tackle you have to stretch and you have to stretch with your studs. How often do we tackle with your studs? Sometimes you follow through. I understand the idea of excessive force but I don't think that is a foul."

Neville added that he didn't think would be red card but suggested that it summed up an inconsistent half from the man in the middle.

"Just looking at Andre Marriner and the challenges, he has been inconsistent this half. There have been times where he has booked players and times where he hasn't.

"I've never seen a referee not book a player for a follow through like that."
