Gary McAllister to miss Rangers clash with Celtic as he recovers from brutal street attack

Gary McAllister will not be in the dug out when Rangers take on Celtic in Sunday's crucial Premiership clash at Parkhead.

The Ibrox assistant is still recovering after being hospitalised in a brutal and unprovoked street attack in Leeds last weekend.

McAllister, 53, had been out for dinner with his wife on Saturday evening after watching Gerrard star in a legends match at Anfield when he was brutally assaulted.

And Gerrard confirmed today that he has told his number two to stay away from Celtic Park on Sunday.

Gerrard said: "I took the decision out of Gary McAllister's hands.

"He won't be with us at the weekend. It is a shame but he has to focus on his recovery and we can't wait for him to return."

West Yorkshire Police announced earlier on Friday that a 32-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident before being released under investigation.

Meanwhile, Gerrard knows a victory is vital on Sunday if his side are to retain any hope of winning the title.

The 38-year-old is looking to become the first Rangers manager in a decade to record back-to-back top flight wins over Celtic after December's 1-0 win at Ibrox.

And he continued: “I think it’s a fantastic game for everyone involved. From a manager's point of view, it is an interesting game. They have a very good home record but we feel confident.

“This time we won’t have the power of Ibrox behind us which was a big help, but the players have to have that mentality to go and get the job done.

"I've never seen fans win a football match, it will be loud but it won't be a lion's den. A lion's den is when four lions jump over a cage and you fear for your life. You have to thrive in this atmosphere. If any of my players don't fancy it they are at the wrong club.

“We expect a tough challenge and game but our focus is on us and what we can do, we felt last time we were there we showed them too much respect and stood off them too much.

“It won’t be clever of me to give my gameplan away, but one thing is clear if you stand off good players they will hurt you."
