Gary McAllister refuses to reveal if Rangers penalties will still be taken by James Tavernier

Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has refused to say who will be on penalty duties should they be awarded any against Ross County on Wednesday.

Steven Gerrard’s side head north bidding to keep the heat on leaders Celtic during a huge round of midweek Premiership fixtures.

James Tavernier has been charged with taking the spot-kicks but the pressure on him has been building after missing another one in the win over Motherwell at the weekend.

It was Tavernier’s third failure from five attempts and a section of the support has been calling for either Alfredo Morelos or Jermain Defoe to take over.

But McAllister has launched a defence of the captain, insisting he retains Rangers’ backing.

The former Leeds and Liverpool midfielder said: "From the minute we arrived here Tavernier has been very robust, he has been available for almost every game and training session, he has had some criticism but he will come through it and we fully trust the guy.

"He has our full backing. He is a top player. But I will not be telling Ross County who is taking our penalties I'm afraid!

"The situation has been spoken about obviously but I am not giving anything away. Time will tell."

Rangers are level on points with Celtic at the top of the table but are just behind Neil Lennon’s side on goal difference.

The champions face St Mirren on Wednesday night as Gerrard’s side take on County; a game that will be shown live on TV.
