Gary McAllister has held talks to become Liverpool’s new first-team coach.
The former Anfield midfielder is a strong contender to join Brendan Rodgers’ backroom team after a coaching clearout last month.
Mike Marsh and assistant manager Colin Pascoe left the club after last season’s disappointing Premier League finish and Rodgers has already brought in Sean O’Driscoll to be his No2 and promoted Pepijn Lijnders from the academy to the newly-created position of first-team development coach.
McAllister would be a popular appointment among supporters after playing an instrumental role in Liverpool’s 2001 treble.
After leaving Liverpool in 2002, McAllister managed Coventry City and Leeds United before backroom spells at Middlesbrough and Aston Villa.
