Gary Mackay-Steven 'set for' Hearts as winger snubs Aberdeen return for Championship battle

Hearts are reportedly on the verge of sealing a deal for Gary Mackay-Steven after beating Aberdeen to his signature.

The winger spent the past two seasons in Major League Soccer earning close to $6,000 per week at New York City FC.

The American side opted not to take up their option on Mackay-Steven for the 2021 campaign though he remained for the Concacaf Champions League.

Aberdeen were keen to bring him back to Pittodrie but according to Sky Sports News the 30-year-old has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal at Hearts.

It's believed he'll undergo a medical on Friday before officially completing his move.

Robbie Neilson's side are looking to win promotion to the Premiership at the first time of asking and the signature of the Scotland international will be a major coup for the Tynecastle club.

Mackay-Steven managed three goals in 35 appearances in MLS but New York City were twice eliminated in the first round of the play-offs.

He's been capped twice by Scotland and has made over 150 appearances in the Premiership.

Mackay-Steven helped Celtic to three league titles in a row during his three seasons at Parkhead, making 62 appearances and scoring 10 goals in all competitions.
