Gary Mackay-Steven's Hearts horror miss reaction after taking the credit for fine assist

Gary Mackay-Steven can now laugh about his horror miss for Hearts after making amends by teeing up their winning goal.

The winger was deployed at the tip of a midfield diamond as Robbie Neilson changed shape to overcome Dundee at Tynecastle and open up a 15 point gap at the top of the Championship.

But it looked like backfiring in the second half.

After Andy Halliday had headed Hearts into the lead before the break, Mackay-Steven should have made it 2-0.

Liam Boyce ran at the Dundee defence before playing in strike partner Armand Gnanduillet.

The Frenchman looked up and squared for Mackay-Steven who had an empty net to tap into.

However, the former Dundee United man made a complete mess of his finish, taking a poor touch that bounced off him and into the grateful arms of Jack Hamilton, who’d been taken out of the equation by Gnanduillet’s cut back.

Those inside the ground, and no doubt the thousands watching from home, could only stare in disbelief after realising that the Jambos were not in fact two goals to the good.

However, the winger made amends with some brilliant play to create the second goal.

He took the ball on his chest with his back to goal, spun, shimmied past Christie Elliott and delivered a wonderful low ball that took three opposition defenders of the game to find Gnanduillet, who enjoyed a lucky rebound in order to find the net.

And Mackay Steven was able to see the bright side after the club instagram account showered him with praise for the assist.

The captioned the highlight clip with “That @gary__11 pass” to which he responded “Almost as good as my goal line clearance for Dundee!”'

After struggling to hit his stride since signing, Mackay-Steven looks to be getting towards the levels expected of him as his match fitness improves.
