Gary Mackay-Steven on Aberdeen's radar as winger looks for new club ahead of MLS departure

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is interested in bringing Gary Mackay-Steven back - but has other areas he needs to strengthen first.

The winger quit Pittodrie for New York City last year but the Major League Soccer outfit confirmed they won’t be renewing his contract next month.

McInnes knows that budgets are tight and he is looking to add defensive and central striking options and it all depends if he could move others on to free up cash for GMS.

McInnes confirmed: “For us, anything we can or can’t do will be dependent on us maybe being able to move one or two players on.

“We’ve got one or two positions prioritised and players within that. But I think we would always be open to bringing good players to the club.

“Gary’s exactly that. We didn’t want to lose Gary in the first place.

“His numbers were good with us. There are other positions that we maybe need to try and focus on more to be honest.”

Aberdeen are likely to be looking for a right-back, especially if Ronald Hernandez seals a January exit.

The Dons are also looking at frontline options with the loans of Ryan Edmondson and Marley Watkins up next month.

Watkins is currently back at Bristol City after injury but a deal to extend that agreement will be delayed until nearer the end of the window.

McInnes added: “I think Marley probably won’t be fit until February. Never say never.”
