Gary Mackay-Steven latest as Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes shoots down Portsmouth medical talk

Derek McInnes is refusing to close the Pittodrie door on Gary Mackay-Steven despite reports he was set to sign for Portsmouth.

The Aberdeen manager provided an update on Mackay-Steven's situation on Thursday after positive talks with the out-of-contract winger.

And he revealed the winger is not set for a medical with Pompey, contrary to reports south of the border.

The 28-year-old does have options but McInnes hopes the former Celtic winger can still be persuaded to pen a new deal in the north east.

He said: "Gary said he's not having a medical, but he's certainly having a look at one or two things.

"I believe Gary is talking to one or two clubs and he's got options.

"If he says he really wants to be here when he weighs up his options then we can look at that.

"But I'm not stopping preparing - we've not closed the door on him and he's not closed the door on us.

"As recently as yesterday he was still telling me he is definitely considering staying - but I need him to want to stay."

McInnes has added six new faces to his Dons squad already with Derby midfielder Craig Bryson agreeing a pre-contract, Welsh international winger Ryan Hedges arriving from Barnsley, Curtis Main from Motherwell, defender Ash Taylor returning from Northampton and youngsters Michael Ruth (Queen's Park) and Luc Bollan (Dundee United) joining.

But he has not finished there.

"We need to get players in, the squad is tight, we're keen to get one or two more in before the European deadline, to make sure we're fully prepared," he said.
