Gary Mackay-Steven boost for Aberdeen as New York City 'end search' for winger

Derek McInnes has been handed a major boost in his hopes to keep Gary Mackay-Steven.

The Aberdeen winger is out of contract and had been considering a move to New York City, but the MLS club appear to have stopped looking for wingers - according to reports.

City manager Domenec Torrent has changed his system and the success of it has led the club to forget about signing wingers as a priority.

Glenn Crooks, a reporter in New York, told the Press and Journal: “I doubt that New York City still has an interest and the reasoning could be part current personnel and part system.

“New York City is unbeaten in its last eight matches ever since changing from a four back to a three back system, essentially from a 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3.

“This shape gets its width from the wing-backs while the two wingers play more inverted and in the half spaces rather than providing width, although mobility allows for the forwards to drift wide as well.”

The news should be a huge boost for McInnes as he looks to rebuild his squad for the summer.

Captain Graeme Shinnie has already left to join Derby on a pre-contract while loan stars Dominic Ball, Max Lowe, James Wilson and Greg Stewart are also away.

Greg Halford also left the club after his short term deal expired.
