Gary Lineker urges Premier League to help Liverpool with fixture scheduling

Former England and Everton striker Gary Lineker has criticised the Premier League’s fixture scheduling for this weekend.

Title-chasing Liverpool and Manchester City both play their matches on Sunday, before turning their attention back to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the second leg’s of their ties.

Liverpool lead Porto 2-0 after their victory at Anfield , while City have work to do after losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in north London.

Lineker believes that the authorities should do more to help English sides in their quest for glory in Europe, suggesting that other countries would not alter their fixture schedule like this.

Man City disagreement exposes weakness Liverpool could exploit in Premier League title battle

In a post on social media, Lineker said: “Crazy that both Liverpool and Manchester City play tomorrow. No other sides in Europe that are still in the Champions League would ever play on a Sunday before midweek CL fixtures.

“The Premier League needs to look after their own.”

Lineker’s point is backed further by the fact that Chelsea, who tackle Liverpool at Anfield, have to host Slavia Prague on Thursday, while Arsenal, who travel to face Watford on Monday night, head to Italy to tackle Serie A giants Napoli.
