Gary Lineker teases Barcelona over Gini Wijnaldum transfer ahead of Liverpool exit

Gary Lineker has weighed in on the latest rumours surrounding Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum and teased one of his former clubs in the process.

The Reds star is expected to leave Anfield upon the expiration of his contract at the end of this month, with no sign of an extension on the horizon.

Now that Wijnaldum is with his country for this summer’s European Championships, and with his contract set to expire in a matter of weeks, rumours are flying around over where he could end up.

Barcelona have been the club supposedly leading the race, but fresh reports on Sunday provided a fresh twist on the future of the midfielder.

It was claimed that Paris Saint-Germain were now the favourites to sign Wijnaldum after making an improved offer on what Barca were willing to give the 30-year-old.

Lineker, who spent three years at the Nou Camp, could not resist weighing in on the speculation.

The ex-striker tweeted: “Barça to let the Gini out of the bottle?”

Journalist Fabrizio Romano, who reported on the story, responded to Lineker's tweet with a laughing face and hourglass emojis.

Wijnaldum has spent five years on Merseyside following his move from Newcastle in 2016, racking up 237 appearances in that time.

The Dutchman was given an emotional send off in Liverpool’s final Premier League match of the season against Crystal Palace, where fans gave him a standing ovation and the players did a guard of honour in his name.

He was also handed a commemorative plaque of the famed ‘Champions Wall’ that is at the AXA Training Centre and formerly at Melwood.
