Gary Lineker takes aim at Man City's Pep Guardiola as Jordan Henderson wins FWA award

Gary Lineker has taken aim at Pep Guardiola by calling out his recent sarcastic comments suggesting a favouritism towards Liverpool players for individual awards.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson became the latest player to win the FWA Footballer of the Year award on Friday, beating the likes of teammates Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk, as well as City star Kevin De Bruyne.

Prior to the award's announcement, Guardiola expressed his thoughts on the forthcoming PFA awards, which a City player has never won.

De Bruyne stands the only chance of pipping a Liverpool player to the gong, but his manager was insistent that would not happen.

"No no, it will be won by a Liverpool player," Guardiola told the  BBC . "When we won the Premier Leagues it was won by a Liverpool player.

"When they win the Premier League I'm pretty sure they are going to win the player of the season, so this award is always for Liverpool."

Last season's PFA award - which is voted for by all Premier League players - was won by Virgil van Dijk, despite City pipping Liverpool to the title by a point.

The season prior, Mohamed Salah picked up the same trophy for his scintillating season even though Liverpool were well off the pace of City in fourth.

Henderson's award however is voted for by members of the Football Writers Association, and Lineker was keen to point out who the Liverpool captain was succeeding when collecting the honour.

Retweeting one of Guardiola's quotes, Lineker wrote: "Last season’s @theofficialfwa winner was Raheem Sterling."

The Match of the Day presenter then added in a separate tweet: "People who frequently see bias against their team are biased.

"There are no agendas to football awards, whether it's PFA or FWA.

"It's either hundreds of journalists or hundreds of footballers each casting a single vote of their preferred choice.

"To suggest otherwise is silly."
