Gary Lineker spots problem with latest Philippe Coutinho transfer speculation

Gary Lineker has labelled the suggestions Barcelona are offering Philippe Coutinho to a select few clubs "nonsense".

Coutinho is expected to leave Barcelona in the summer after he returns from his loan spell at Bayern Munich.

The £142million acquisition from Liverpool is not in Barcelona boss Quique Setien's plans for next season, and the Catalan giants are looking for a firesale.

A host of Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for Coutinho, who was last at the top of his game when playing in England.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are now seemingly out of the running, as Chelsea and Everton have emerged as the new favourites to land the Brazilian.

One report claimed Barcelona had selected Chelsea as an appropriate team in which to sell Coutinho to, prompting a response from Lineker.

"This nonsense always makes me laugh," Lineker tweeted. "If a club wants to sell a player, they'd hardly limit it to a few clubs of their choosing.

"'Hi there Mr Abramovich, we want to sell you Coutinho and we don't want him to go anywhere but Chelsea.' 'How considerate, we'll take him.'"

Barcelona had hoped that Bayern Munich would stump up the cash to sign Coutinho permanently at the end of the season.

The club's had agreed on a fee of £110million, but Bayern have no plans to trigger this clause when the window re-opens in a few months.

Instead, Barcelona will likely have to settle for a fee much smaller than this.
