Gary Lineker sparks Newcastle transfer debate over Chris Wood's £20m price tag

Gary Lineker has questioned the price tag for Burnley striker Chris Wood as Newcastle United close in on their second January signing.

The New Zealand international will hold talks on Tyneside and undergo a medical after a deal was agreed in principle.

Newcastle are understood to have met a release clause worth a reported £20m, leaving Burnley powerless to prevent the striker leaving for a relegation rival.

It is a deal which has raised question marks among some supporters on social media, with Wood recently celebrating his 30th birthday.

The target man has struggled so far this season, scoring just three times in 17 appearances, but has previously registered double-digit returns in the last four Premier League seasons.

It is a concern evidently shared by Match of the Day host Lineker, judging by his reaction to an update on the story from Sky Sports News.

However, a number of fans of Newcastle and other clubs responded by defending the fee for a proven top-flight striker.

One supporter wrote: "Finding a Premier League striker who can hit the ground running in a relegation scrap isn’t easy in January.

"And this also weakens a rival considerably. Money well spent for Newcastle."

Another fan commented: "Not too shabby business if we're being honest. Newcastle made 15+ crosses in the last two games of football with only one goal scored.

"He fits our style of play like a glove especially with Tripper and the type of crosses he can provide."

There were some supporters who agreed with Lineker, believing Newcastle are overpaying on the prospective deal.

One fan replied: "Newcastle are going to end up like Blackburn, paying way over the odds with other teams taking them for a ride."

Another commented: "As a Burnley fan, I could not be happier.

"£25m for a striker who has scored three goals all season and consistently been off the mark. Even if you double that with ‘better service’, you are nowhere near what we will get in return for that money.

"Newcastle have shot themselves here."
