Gary Lineker slams 'ridiculous' VAR after Liverpool's Roberto Firmino goal ruled out for offside

Gary Lineker says VAR is getting more ridiculous by the day after Roberto Firmino saw a goal controversially ruled out for offisde.

After Liverpool had fallen behind to Aston Villa, Firmino thought he had equalised shortly before half-time when he turned the ball into the net after Andy Robertson's shot had been deflected.

Yet play was brought back by VAR when Diogo Jota was adjudged to have been offside by the narrowest of margins after Trent Alexander-Arnold's lofted pass.

VAR firstly deliberated over whether Aston Villa's Matty Cash had touched the pass into the path of Jota before then deciding the Reds forward's arm had been in an offside position by a matter of millimetres, with the line on the replays being measured through his elbow.

It proved too much for Lineker to handle, who like many Reds fans was infuriated by the decision.

Posting on Twitter, the Match of the Day host made reference to Wolves' Willian Jose having a goal ruled out on Friday evening due to teammate Daniel Podence's arm being fractionally offside.

He said: "I’m sorry, but VAR gets more ridiculous by the day. How on earth can they say with any confidence that that is offside?

"Same as last night’s disallowed goal. Ridiculous."

Speaking on co-commentary on Sky Sports, former Reds defender Jamie Carragher said it was the sort of decision that showed football has lost the notion of being level in an offside call.

He said: "I know people will say it's because it's a Liverpool decision, but I've been consistent throughout.

"It's the one that really gets to people, these tight offsides.

"We've lost level, basically, what we all deemed level before VAR came in, we've lost that."
