Gary Lineker slams England fans as "embarrassing" for Virgil van Dijk treatment

Gary Lineker has slammed the England fans as "embarrassing" for their treatment of Virgil van Dijk in the Nations League.

The Liverpool defender was representing Holland in the semi-final of the international competition against England.

Every time the centre-back touched the ball in the first half he was booed by the England supporters packed inside the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques.

Liverpool fans voiced their frustration on social media, with one tweeting: "They can boo Van Dijk all they like, he will destroy England. We Scousers can watch and laugh at little England."

And another adding: "Are the English fans that are booing Van Dijk going to boo Trent Alexander-Arnold as well? I'm so confused right now."

Lineker also revealed his disappointment in the England supporters, simply tweeting: "embarrassing".

Van Dijk was named in the Holland starting XI on Thursday night just five days after representing Liverpool in the Champions League final, which they won against Tottenham.

Ahead of the game the Dutchman tweeted: "Great couple of days back together with the national team and it's been good to see the boys!

"We are all looking forward to our Nations League semi-final tomorrow against England!"
