Gary Lineker set to finally get Trent Alexander-Arnold wish as England face Andorra

Gary Lineker appears to have finally got his wish as England boss Gareth Southgate is set to start Trent Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role for the Three Lions clash at home to Andorra this evening.

Lineker has long been calling on both Liverpool and England to deploy Alexander-Arnold in midfield due to the extraordinary technical ability he regularly showcases from right-back at Anfield.

Given Andorra present one of the easiest tests for England in their World Cup qualifying group, Southgate can tinker and experiment tactically to determine his best side for more sterner tests - such as a trip to Poland on Wednesday.

According to the Telegraph, one of Southgate's tactical tweaks will come in the form of moving Alexander-Arnold from his traditional overlapping right-back role, into the right-side of a three or four-man midfield.

This could be the decision that sparks the 22-year-old's international career into life, as of yet he has struggled to recapture his Liverpool form in an England shirt.

His progress was not helped by the fact he was a late forced omission for the Euro 2020 squad after sustaining an injury one of the final warm-up games on the eve of the tournament.

Previously, Southgate has blamed himself, claiming that as a coach he has failed to get the best out of Alexander-Arnold, a talent that has made just eleven England appearances in three years.

The Liverpool academy has spoken for the first time about his England struggles, admitting he isn't entirely sure what he puts his poor form down to.

"It's difficult to say really, isn't it?' Because you're playing a different system, with different players…it's no excuses but it's hard to find your feet, to find form. Everyone and anyone is going to have difficulties with that.

"To be fair, since I've come into the squad, I haven't really been the best version of myself, I haven't put in the performances I have regularly for my club. I expect more for myself when I play for England.

"That's what I try to do every time I get the opportunity and hopefully now over the next week I am given an opportunity to perform and am able to take it. I had a really good game a few years back in the Nations League third-place play-off against Switzerland [in 2019]", Alexander-Arnold continued.

"I thought I played really well then but I just couldn't hit the ground running after that. Other than that they have been mediocre performances by my standard and that's what I need to improve. That's what I have been working on."

The Champions League winner went on to shed light on discussions between Southgate and himself, revealing what the England boss feels he needs to work on.

"We have had talks. We talk about things that I'm doing well, things I can improve. We have touched on the defensive side of my game a bit more, to be a bit more reliable and trustworthy in that respect and that's something I know I need to work on.

"I know what I need to work on and being able to put that in training and show the coaching staff that I have been and am working on it."
