Gary Lineker sends Liverpool warning on Premier League day of destiny

Gary Lineker has sent Liverpool a warning on their Premier league day of destiny.

The former Everton forward found himself in a similar position to the ones the Reds find themselves in this Sunday.

Lineker bagged a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Southampton at the end of the 1985/86 campaign.

But it wasn't enough for Everton, who were pipped to the post by Liverpool.

Taking to Twitter on a day when Liverpool could miss out on winning the Premier League despite beating Wolves on the final match of the campaign, Lineker wrote: "Been in Liverpool's position myself with Everton.

"Scored a hat-trick but ended up being one of the most miserable feelings imaginable."

Lineker has previously spoken out about the 1985/86 campaign in an interview with the Liverpool Echo.

He explained how he lost a pair of lucky boots prior to Everton's match with Oxford, which they lost 1-0.

He found them in time for the Southampton game, but despite the victory and his virtuoso performance it was too little too late.

Pep Guardiola sends assured message to Liverpool ahead of Premier League final day

"My old pair [of boots] were found in time for the following weekend against Southampton when I scored a hat-trick, but by then it was too late," said Lineker.

"We should have won both trophies. We were clear at the top of the league and when we won at Anfield in March I think everyone thought we'd done it.

What Liverpool team's WhatsApp texts were dominated with after Vincent Kompany goal

"But Liverpool went on a run where they won the last 10 games or something silly like that. We had the Oxford debacle and that was it.

"But I'll always remember scoring at Anfield in a Merseyside derby – in fact I scored in all three derby matches that year, including the Cup Final. Unfortunately [Alan] Hansen had the last laugh."
