Gary Lineker salutes Rangers with topical Tory one-liner after Europa League success

Match of the Day host Gary Linker has saluted Rangers for reaching the last 32 of the Europa League as he recognised the "blue side" on social media amid General Election fever.

The BBC host posted on social media to highlight the Ibrox side reaching the knockouts with a topical one-liner as the Tories raced to a majority victory.

Lineker, who also fronts BT Sport's Champions League coverage, worked alongside Rangers boss Steven Gerrard for the broadcaster before the 39-year-old took the reins at Ibrox.

And he was hoping to catch a few out with his playful message on Twitter as the nation was engrossed in the developments of the big vote.

Lineker posted: "Great win for the blue side. It’s the first time since 2011 that Rangers have qualified for the European knockout stage."

Rangers go into Monday's draw and could face the likes of Manchester United , Arsenal and Inter in the round of 32.

But Gerrard insists teams will be making a grave error if they underrate the Ibrox side.

He said: "We’ll get who we’re given. We’ll be the team other players might fancy playing - but I’m sure Porto, Young Boys and Feyenoord felt like that.

“We’ll give it our best shot and surprise a few more people.

“We’ve just qualified in front of some decent teams. So we’re ready for whoever we’re drawn against.

"It’s going to be very nice to see Rangers in the draw, among some elite teams around Europe."
