Gary Lineker's warning for Mikel Arteta after his appointment at Arsenal

Gary Lineker has warned Mikel Arteta that he faces a "hugely difficult and demanding first leadership role" after he was appointed as Arsenal's new head coach.

The Spaniard has swapped Manchester for north London after leaving his role as assistant head coach to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City to become the permanent successor to Unai Emery at Arsenal .

It is his first role in top level management on his own, having worked at City with Guardiola over the past three years.

And Match of the Day host Lineker has sent the former Arsenal and Everton midfielder a warning ahead of his stint as Arsenal head coach.

Writing on social media, the former Spurs striker said: "Wish Mikel Arteta all the very best. Hugely difficult and demanding first leadership role. Hope it works out for an extremely smart and likeable señor."

Arteta has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Arsenal, and is set to hold his first press conference as Gunners head coach this afternoon, ahead of the Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park tomorrow (Saturday).
