Gary Lineker's response to Brendan Rodgers confirming his plans amid Newcastle interest

Leicester legend and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker is delighted manager Brendan Rodgers has committed his future to the Foxes.

The former Liverpool boss has been linked with Premier League rivals Newcastle since a Saudi-backed consortium completed a takeover earlier this month.

Rodgers told the press on Friday: "I have got a contract until 2025, I absolutely love being here.

"I'm very fortunate. I’ve got a great chief executive and a director of football who I have a close relationship with and a group of players that I really enjoy working with."

Rodgers has twice qualified for the Europa League and won the FA Cup since he was appointed Leicester manager in February 2019.

He also came agonisingly close to winning the Premier League with Liverpool in 2013-14 and won seven trophies in two-and-a-half years at Celtic, including two Scottish titles.

Speculation has grown about Rodgers' future since Newcastle's £305m takeover was completed, with the next Toon boss set to have a hefty kitty to spend in the transfer market.

Current manager Steve Bruce will remain in charge for their next game against Tottenham but is widely expected to be sacked in the near future.

But Rodgers has no interest in being his successor, adding: "We have an infrastructure here that allows us to look to compete, so as long as they don’t want to move me then I’m very happy being here at the club.

"I’ve seen all the reports around it but of course it doesn’t help anyone, particularly Newcastle and Steve.

"It’s the type of week that I don’t like in the modern game. Managers and coaches work hard to do the best for our teams and then we have speculation and gossip that goes around.

"It can destabilise supporters and maybe players, but it doesn’t benefit anyone at all.

"Thankfully I’ve been in the game long enough now to just focus on my job and my role, and I’m very happy to do that."

Rodgers' commitment to Leicester has delighted the club's fans - including legendary striker Lineker.

The 80-cap England international tweeted: "Good news. Love having him at the club."

Lineker scored 103 goals for Leicester after coming through the ranks at his local club before representing Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham.

Will Newcastle replace Steve Bruce? Let us know in the comments below

Speaking at his Friday press conference, Bruce admitted he'd love to stay at Newcastle - if given the chance.

He said: "Who wouldn’t want to try? I will not give up the hope of it.

"Who wouldn’t want this job going forward. Who wouldn’t want to manage Newcastle. There will be hundreds wanting the same and it is exciting times.

“I will have a crack and try my utmost. Who would not want this opportunity and love to be sitting in my chair. I will make a fist of it and do my best for the club."
