Gary Lineker's five-word message to sum up Arsenal's Europa League defeat to Olympiacos

It was a night to forget for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta as the Gunners exited the Europa League on away goals at the hands of Greek side Olympiacos.

Mikel Arteta's Gunners lost out to their Greek opponents 2-1 on the night at the Emirates Stadium, with Youssef El-Arabi's late goal in extra time helping Olympiacos progress on away goals.

That was despite Arsenal taking a 1-0 lead into the second leg of the tie, after Alexandre Lacazette's goal late on in the game in Greece last week.

But Arsenal laboured in north London and struggled to get going against a well-organised Olympiacos side, who frustrated their hosts.

Premier League top scorer: Who leads the race for the golden boot?

Pape Abou Cisse silenced the Gunners' faithful early in the second half as he headed home unmarked to level the scores on aggregate, with the game then going to extra time.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang thought he had won it for Arsenal as he levelled matters on the night - and put te Gunners ahead on aggregate - with a stunning overhead kick in the second half of extra time.

However, El-Arabi struck with just one minute remaining to seal victory for Olympiacos and leave Arsenal deflated and out of the competition.

And former Tottenham forward Gary Lineker summed up how many fans watching would have felt as he posted a five-word message on social media following the game.

His tweet, which can be seen above, simply read: "Blimey. Absolute shocker for @Arsenal."

The result means Arsenal now have just the Premier League and FA Cup to focus on for the rest of the season.

The Gunners currently sit ninth in the Premier League, seven points behind Chelsea in fourth and four points behind Manchester United in fifth.

Arteta's side travel to face Portsmouth in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.
