Gary Lineker's Black Lives Matter tweet during Man City v Arsenal divides opinion

Gary Lineker has been accused of "casual racism" by some Twitter users for a joke he made during Manchester City v Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The game, which was the second since the Premier League restarted, saw players from both sides take a knee ahead of kick-off in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, while the slogan also replaced the names of all players on the back of their shirts.

In reference to this, half-way through the first period Lineker tweeted: "Had a tenner on Black Lives Matter to score the first goal."

The 59-year-old immediately faced a backlash from some, with one user replying: "Wow. Nothing to joke about, Gary", while another added: "Out of order Gary! Is casual racism a thing with you now?"

Some were more supportive of the former striker, however, with one person saying: "How pathetic are some people on here trying to make something out of nothing? I'm black, fully behind BLM... and I laughed out loud to that one", while another added: "It's a joke, relax."

Lineker, meanwhile, offered a number of other thoughts on the game, such as joking at the expense of Arsenal defender David Luiz after the Brazilian was sent off by tweeting: "Red card was a bit harsh on City."

The Match of the Day host was recently involved in a huge new anti-racism campaign calling for change at the top of football.

He joined the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Jadon Sancho in making a powerful video highlighting the lack of black people in positions of power in various different sports bodies.

England star Sterling helps deliver a message saying that they are “tired” of calling for change and are urging the Government to get involved as he stressed: “I will never tire of being black."
