Former Tottenham and Leicester City star Gary Lineker has revealed who he thinks would be the best fit as the next Match of the Day host.
Lineker has fronted the programme since 1999 when he took over duties from veteran presenter Des Lynam after several stints on Premier League highlights shows.
Whilst Lineker has no intention to retire from Match of the Day soon, he has explained that he believes fellow former Tottenham player Jermaine Jenas would be a great option.
Ex-England international Jenas, 36, has raised his profile since his retirement in 2014 from playing with regular appearances on Match of the Day, Football Focus and BT Sport, while he is currently the face of the Pool’s Footie5s.
Lineker believes when he does call it a day that Jenas should be posed the question about taking over his role.
“He (Jenas) would be good,” Lineker told the Radio Times when asked whether Jenas would be a good replacement.
"He (Lynam) was fabulously laid-back and smart. Des always used to say, ‘If you think of things that might be funny, go for it. Some people will like it, some won’t.’
"He told me, ‘So many presenters are bland’ and he taught me to be myself, have a bit of fun with it, be brave. I thought, ‘I’m never going to be able to crack this’.
“I remember driving home thinking, ‘This is just too hard, too difficult.’ There was a lot of self-doubt. I realise how lucky I’ve been. I’ve been given some kind of talent to play football and made the most of life since. I’ve been immensely fortunate.”
