Gary Lineker responds to claims fate has put Liverpool top - and fans love it

Gary Lineker slammed claims Liverpool are top of the Premier League table due to fate - and Liverpool fans loved it.

A tweet from BBC Sport asked: "Is fate taking Liverpool to their first title since 1990?" and sparked an angry response from Reds fans.

Lineker joined in those blasting the notion by replying "No, but their football might" and attracting a huge response from supporters.

The message received over 14,000 likes from fans who declared: "Gary you can see class" and adding "Cheers Gary".

Another fan replied "Every team needs luck but my word I've loved watching us this year" and added: "To keep up with probs the best ever team to play in Prem history is not just luck".

One Red noted: "Every team gets luck at certain times it’s just when it’s at the business end fans of other clubs just see it as something else. All the last minute goals will soon be forgotten if the Reds finish 2nd."

Liverpool snatched a last-gasp win over Tottenham at the weekend to move back to the top of the Premier League table.

They are two points clear of Manchester City with six games remaining, although their title rivals do have a game in hand.

Jurgen Klopp's side head to Southampton on Friday (8pm) before turning their attentions to a huge Champions League quarter-final clash with Porto at Anfield next Tuesday (8pm).

Whether it is fate or skill that carries Liverpool through the rest of the season, fans are not likely to be concerned as long as they can lift their first league title in 29 years.
