Gary Lineker reacts to Dutch FA's decision that could impact Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham

Former England and Tottenham striker Gary Lineker has expressed his concern that the 2019/20 Premier League campaign may be unable to be completed.

Divisions across England are currently suspended due to the coronavirus crisis, although discussions are ongoing around plans to resume the campaign when it is deemed safe to do so.

However, this week saw the Dutch FA officially cancel the Eredivisie season with no league champions or relegation

Who's played the most Premier League minutes?

"I do know that what is true for us, we are footballers we want to play, is true for all of my colleagues around the continent," KNVB chief Just Spee told the BBC.

"And in the UK it is not different. So they will hold onto a sliver of hope as long as it's there.

"But again, we've seen how this develops. Is it realistic? In the end it probably will not be but we'll see.

"To be honest, seeing what is happening and seeing that things get postponed week by week by week, how realistic is it that within the next three or four weeks we will come to a different conclusion? Not so much I believe.

"And also the Premier League will need a number of weeks to complete their competition.

"Is there going to be enough time for that? Doubtful, very doubtful."

Amid concerns that the Premier League could follow suit, Lineker has reacted on Twitter to the Dutch FA's decision.

"May well prove to be the only way," the former England striker posted on social media.

"Hardly the fairest way, though?"

UEFA held a crunch meeting on Thursday morning to decide the fate of the 2019-20 campaign, expressing their preference for seasons to be completed but stated that if that is not an option, qualification to their competitions should be based on ‘sporting merit.

While the Premier League remains committed to completing the current season, it is unclear when or how the resumption could take place and the longer the suspension of the season, the higher the likelihood of action being required to end the campaign prematurely.

However, the Bundesliga has revealed their plans to resume the campaign in just two weeks' time, raising hope that similar action could be taken in England.
