Gary Lineker predicts Premier League winner between Man City and Liverpool FC

Manchester City returned to Premier League action in style on Saturday, smashing five past West Ham in a dominant victory at the London Stadium.

That puts Pep Guardiola's side in the familiar position of being top of the table, although it is still an extremely early stage of the campaign and plenty of twists and turns are to come.

City, having won the Premier League for the last two seasons in a row, are seen as the favourites to lift the title again this season but Match of the Day host Gary Lineker sees things differently.

Making his predictions for the season, the former Everton man has backed Liverpool to bring an end to a three-decade wait for a league title, building upon last season's second-placed finish and Champions League triumph.

“Alisson they are reporting might be out for a while so that might make a difference. I think it will be very tight between the two," he told TalkSport.

“Before yesterday I was saying Liverpool and I shouldn’t be put off by the fact they won 4-1.

“You can’t change. I think it’s really hard to do it and lift yourself for three seasons on the bounce, which has proved to be the case in the Premier League.

“Pep Guardiola has shown that he just wins leagues year in and year out. I wouldn’t put it past him, but let’s go Liverpool.”
