Gary Lineker fears English football might have to take another enforced break because of the coronavirus pandemic after Liverpool's FA Cup clash with Aston Villa was thrown into doubt.
The Villans confirmed on Thursday afternoon that they had had to close their Bodymoor Heath training ground and cancel training after.
It comes after a "large number" of first team players and staff had tested positive for coronavirus, with more positive results returning after a second round of testing.
After Villa confirmed the outbreak, Match of the Day presenter and former England international Lineker took to Twitter to voice his fears of another suspension.
"It appears highly likely that Aston Villa's cup tie with Liverpool will be called off after a Covid outbreak in the Villa camp," he wrote.
"I fear football might succumb in the next few weeks."
Professional sport in England had been confirmed to be free to continue as normal earlier this week after the government placed the United Kingdom into a third national lockdown.
English football had previously been suspended for three months between March and June 2020 when cases first began to rise, prompting matches to be cancelled.
