Gary Lineker offers his opinion on leaked England starting XI to play Germany

Gary Lineker has provided his opinion on a leaked England team and believes Gareth Southgate will be looking to, primarily, keep things tight at the back against Germany.

The Three Lions take on the Germans at Wembley in the last-16 of this summer's European Championships on Tuesday, with England manager Southgate looking for retribution after his Euro 96 heartache.

A leaked England team has been doing the rounds on social media this morning.

It alleges that Southgate is keen to switch up his formation and start full-backs Reece James and Luke Shaw on opposite flanks with Kyle Walker as a right-sided centre-back alongside Harry Maguire and John Stones.

In midfield, the man of the match against the Czech Republic, Bukayo Saka, is set to keep his place in front of Declan Rice and Kalvin Philipps and alongside Raheem Sterling with Harry Kane up top.

This means that Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, and the returning Mason Mount, are set to be named on the bench.

Lineker responded to the proposed England team on Twitter and couldn't resist providing his thoughts.

"Just seen the alleged England team," Wrote Lineker. "Defend! Defend! Defend! Defend! Defend!"

Stuart Pearce spoke to Mirror Football ahead of England's clash with Germany and believes his former teammate Southgate has learnt from his Euro 96 heartache and that it will ultimately help the Three Lions.

"I think he's learned from it definitely," said Southgate. "It sharpened his focus as an international manager as one who could be taking his team into a penalty shootout.

"I see it as a major strength, his history from the penalty spot, as much as it was with myself. I think it plays into England's hands.

"I think we saw it in 2018 when they beat Colombia in a shootout, you could tell by the fact Jordan Pickford was one of the takers, they had done their homework. If it does go to a penalty shootout, I would reasonably comfortable that England have done as best as they possibly can in preparing for it."
