Gary Lineker mocks Piers Morgan after old comments on Emma Raducanu's "shame" emerge

By Callum Vurley

Piers Morgan's old comments on Emma Raducanu have been brought back to light by Gary Lineker after the Brit's success on Saturday night.

The 18-year-old stunned the world when she won the US open this weekend without dropping a single set.

She beat fellow teenager Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4, 6-3, at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to claim Britain’s first US Open title since 1977 in jaw-dropping fashion.

The youngster has shot to fame from relative obscurity, beating the likes of Belinda Bencic, Maria Sakkari and Shelby Rogers along the way to success.

Almost everyone in the country has been supporting Raducanu, who received her A-level results just a month ago.

John McEnroe had made disparaging comments on the teenager after she pulled out of Wimbledon earlier this year.

Raducanu admitted she had difficulty breathing and had to retire from her match against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.

TV personality Morgan backed up the American’s thoughts when he said: “McEnroe told the truth. Ms Raducuna’s a talented player but couldn’t handle the pressure a d quit when she was losing badly.

“Not ‘brave’, just a shame. If I were her, I’d tell my fans to stop abusing McEnroe, and seek his advice on how to toughen up & become a champion like he was.”

After receiving a backlash on Twitter, Piers bizarrely implied that his comments helped Raducanu win the US Open in his first tweet after victory.

He tweeted: “Imagine if @EmmaRaducanu had taken Twitter’s advice & carried on ‘bravely’ and ‘heroically’ quitting and losing… .”

“Thank God she’s made of tougher stuff & realised that winners don’t quit & have to learn how to handle the pressure. That’s why she’s Champion today. Congrats Emma.”

It did not take long for Lineker to get involved, who replied: “Digging, digging.”

A number of tennis fans got involved, too, with one saying: “Hold on @piersmorgan, she stayed and won 19 sets.. but you walked off one?”

Another replied: “Stop embarrassing yourself, Piers. You don’t actually think she listened to you directly, do you?”

And a third said: “She’s a heck of a lot tougher than a guy who walked off on air because someone disagreed with him. A real champion!”

Among the congratulations for Raducanu was The Queen, who called the wonderkid "outstanding".

"I send my congratulations to you on your success," Her Majesty said.

"It is a remarkable achievement at such a young age, and is testament to your hard work and dedication."
