Gary Lineker mocks Matt Ritchie own goal in Newcastle United v Fulham match

Gary Lineker reckons Matt Ritchie's own goal in Newcastle United's Premier League clash with Fulham was one of the "most comical" he has ever seen.

The unfortunate Ritchie put through his own net in the 42nd minute of Saturday's night fixture at St James' Park to put the visitors 1-0 up at the break.

Ademola Lookman's corner was headed down by Tosin Adarabioyo but the ball was going wide until Ritchie's inadvertent intervention.

The Scotland international was unable to get out of the way and the ball struck him in the face and ricocheted into the net.

Newcastle fans will not have been laughing - but Match of the Day presenter Lineker could not help himself.

He took to Twitter to say: "Matt Ritchie has just scored one of the most comical own goals I think I’ve ever witnessed."

Lineker also claimed that even Newcastle legend Alan Shearer could not help but see the funny side.

"Even @alanshearer couldn’t fight a chuckle after 4 replays," Lineker added.

Ritchie was recalled to Steve Bruce's starting line-up as the manager made five changes to the side that was beaten 5-2 at Leeds United on Wednesday night.

Paul Dummett, Jonjo Shelvey, Miguel Almiron and DeAndre Yedlin were also brought into the team.

Ryan Fraser, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick, Jamal Lewis and Jacob Murphy were the players to make way.
