Gary Lineker makes 'weird' Anfield claim ahead of Liverpool vs Real Madrid

Gary Lineker has described the 'weird' feeling of being inside Anfield for a European game without fans being present.

As has been the case for most of this season, tonight’s Champions League tie with Real Madrid will be played behind closed doors.

But in normal circumstances, Anfield would have been full to captivity for tonight’s game, as the Reds look to stage one of their famous European comebacks.

Liverpool trail 3-1 from the first-leg in the Spanish capital, with Mohamed Salah scoring what could be a vital away goal.

And Lineker, who is lucky enough to be inside Anfield for tonight’s game as part of BT Sports coverage, has spoken on the strange feeling of no fans being present.

“To be at Anfield for a European night is so weird without the fans,” he wrote on Instagram before BT’s coverage got underway.

While Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is hoping his side can create their own atmosphere inside Anfield tonight.

He said: “We have to, we have to. It’s not the first interview I had today and everybody is [talking] about our comebacks in the past and it was with supporters and stuff like this.

“That’s true. But [there are] a lot of problems we will face before we have even a chance to win that game – and that’s actually the idea, that we try to win the football game tomorrow night – and it’s just one extra problem, no supporters in the stadium.

“The result [in the first leg] is a problem, the quality of the opponent is a problem and then obviously that the stadium is empty is a problem as well.”

The winner of tonight's tie will face Chelsea in the semi-finals after they progressed into the final four of this season’s competition with a 2-1 victory on aggregate over Porto in Seville on Tuesday night.
