Gary Lineker makes huge Liverpool claim after third defeat in four games

Captain Jordan Henderson has been unavailable for Liverpool since pulling up against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last month.

The Reds have sorely missed their main man in the engine room, having slumped to three defeats in their last four games following a long unbeaten start to the season.

The England international is the driving force for Jurgen Klopp’s side and has been a revelation in the past couple of seasons.

This term he’s been so fierce in the centre of the park and his hunger has put Liverpool in pole position in the Premier League.

Henderson's standout performances have seen him rise to become one of the favourites to scoop the PFA Player of the Year award, and pundit Gary Lineker thinks he deserves the accolade - particularly given Liverpool's form in the last couple of weeks without their leader.

Lineker wrote on Twitter: “There’s every chance that @JHenderson’s injury could well clinch him the Footballer of the Year trophy.

“Sometimes you don’t realise a player’s importance to a side until they’re absent.”

Liverpool lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 first-leg after Henderson left the field of play with an injury.

Klopp's side beat West Ham back in the Premier League but were then comprehensively defeated by Watford and followed that up with a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup.

The Reds are now set to host Bournemouth at the weekend and will look to get back to winning ways before Diego Simeone's side come to Anfield for the second-leg of the European Cup tie next Wednesday where they hope Henderson could feature.
