Gary Lineker has posted a jibe about the European Super League jibe amid a dramatic day for Jose Mourinho and Tottenham.
Just a matter of hours after Tottenham pledged themselves to the new Super League, which has drawn vast criticism from the world of football, Daniel Levy confirmed Jose Mourinho had been sacked.
After around 17 months in charge, Mourinho was sacked this morning amid a disappointing season for Tottenham which has left them looking up at the top six.
Levy's statement read this morning: "Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.
"On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution."
While many fans may believe it was time for Mourinho to go, the decision comes amid a hectic 24 hours for Tottenham which has seen them upset fans by becoming one of the founding members of the Super League, and now they have sacked their manager just days before Sunday's Carabao Cup final.
And tweeting about the incident, former Tottenham striker turned Match of the Day presenter Lineker drew a link between the two incidents.
"Jose Mourinho is fired. He is the first of the European Super League managers to lose their job," he wrote.
Though, football.london understands Spurs' decision to part company with Jose Mourinho was based on results and nothing to do with the European Super League, despite reports suggesting that the Portuguese had refused to take training over the issue.
That was not the case and it is understood the decision was taken purely due to results with Tottenham seventh in the Premier League table after Friday's draw with Everton.
Tottenham host Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday night, before facing Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday in the Carabao Cup final.
