Gary Lineker launches Raheem Sterling defence after Man City criticism

Match of the Day host and former England striker Gary Lineker has defended Raheem Sterling following Manchester City's draw against West Ham.

City came back from behind with Phil Foden equalising after Michail Antonio had opened the scores but could not find a winner.

The absence of Sergio Aguero was felt in the final third and Sterling missed a couple of decent opportunities, with the second coming after a poor touch took him into a wider position than he would have liked.

Some criticism has been aimed at Sterling, who came into the game on the back of scoring in two consecutive Premier League matches.

As such, Lineker has been left bemused by the negative comments aimed at Sterling and took to social media to defend the England international.

"Miss the odd chance, drop a few points, just 5 games in to a strange behind closed doors season and you get this negative nonsense.

"It ain’t easy at this level, and it’s impossible to always be brilliant."

City are back in Champions League action this week as they look to make it two wins from two in the group stage when they travel to Marseille.

However, it is the Premier League form that will be of concern as City have taken eight points from a possible 15 in their opening five matches.

Guardiola's side travel to Sheffield United next, before back-to-back matches at the Etihad Stadium against Burnley and Fulham.
