Gary Lineker issues verdict on Manchester United's James Maddison transfer pursuit

Match of the Day host and Leicester City hero Gary Lineker has insisted that the club do not have to sell any of their players, amid Manchester United's pursuit of James Maddison.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have made the 23-year-old England international a top target for 2020 in their hunt for creative talent, while other members of Leicester's squad have attracted interest from other clubs.

However, with Leicester on course to secure Champions League football next season and preparing for a Carabao Cup semi-final with Aston Villa, luring players from the East Midlands outfit will be a difficult task.

In fact, Lineker believes there is no reason why the Foxes will need to cash in, identifying their financial strength and the fact that the young squad has plenty to achieve.

“They’re a young team as well, they’re going to get better, they don’t need to sell players and [have] wealthy owners," he told Squawka.

I’m sure a lot of teams would like [to sign] a lot of Leicester’s players but they’re doing something together and they could become a really good outfit.”

The former Barcelona striker also joked that a new era in the Premier League has emerged, with a big three replacing the big six: “We’re reaching an era of the big three. Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester!”
