Gary Lineker hits back at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tackling comments after Man United draw

Gary Lineker has defended the decision to not disallow Southampton's goal against Manchester United and hit back at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's post-match remarks.

The United boss was incredulous in his post-match interview following the final whistle after Bruno Fernandes appeared to have been fouled in the build-up to Southampton's goal.

But Craig Pawson did not award a free-kick in accordance with new Premier League laws that encourage lighter-touch officiating.

VAR also did not overrule the decision despite protests from the United bench and players on the field.

After the game Solskjaer hit-out at the decision and called for more clarity in the game.

“We can’t go from one extreme, from volleyball or basketball last year, to rugby," he fumed.

"I like the more lenient way. It’s more men’s football but that is a foul. It’s a clear foul - he goes straight through Bruno. We did suffer a few tackles, and that was part of their thinking early on it looked like.”

BBC pundit, and former England international, Gary Lineker did not seem to be on the same wavelength, though, and criticised Solskjaer for his remarks on social media.

"No Ole, that’s not true," Lineker tweeted to his 8.1 million Twitter followers.

"The constant free kicks for minimal contact and endless stoppages was making the game dull, as well as encouraging diving.

"Real fouls and dangerous play are still punished, as they should be, but It’s a much more enjoyable spectacle when it’s a contact sport."

As a result of the decision, United dropped two points at the St Mary's and already dropped two after just two games into the Premier League season.

Solskjaer will be hoping to bounce back against Wolverhampton at the Molineux next weekend.
