Gary Lineker has a question for Steve Bruce's critics as Newcastle United beat Southampton

Newcastle United made it a second win in a week thanks to victory over Southampton - prompting Match of the Day's Gary Lineker to ask a question of Steve Bruce's critics.

Having replaced Rafa Benitez at United, Bruce has received some criticism but following a thumping off Leicester City in October they've won five games.

The result against Southampton - 2-1, thanks to goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez - makes it unbeaten at St James' Park in the last seven games.

As the final whistle blew, Lineker tweeted: "Another win for Newcastle United.

"Are we allowed to say that Steve Bruce is an excellent manager?"

His MOTD colleague, and United legend Alan Shearer was left impressed with Bruce's substitutions - with all three changing the dynamic of the game - two being involved in the two goals scored today.

Andy Carroll set up Shelvey for the header to level things up before Sean Longstaff , who came on for Miguel Almiron, fired on goal - it falling kindly for Fernandez to place home.

The win puts United on 22 points and into the top ten as the Magpies head into the Christmas period.
