Gary Lineker gives verdict on 'worthy champions' Liverpool and praises key decision

Gary Linker has hailed Liverpool as 'worthy champions' as Jurgen Klopp’s side close in on the Premier League title.

Liverpool are now 1/1000 odds on to claim the title with Manchester City languishing down at 80/1.

That is because the Reds are now 23 points clear at the top of the table and require just two more points to be crowned champions.

But if City fail to win away to Chelsea tomorrow night, then Klopp’s side will be crowned champions for the first time in 30 years.

But if City do win against Chelsea, then the title could be settled next Thursday, July 2, when Liverpool make the trip to Etihad Stadium to face Pep Guardiola’s side.

And taking to Twitter during the Reds’ 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, the former Everton man claimed it was 'absolutely' the right call to finish the Premier League season and crown the Anfield club champions.

He wrote: “What a great side @LFC are. The long wait is almost over. Absolutely the right decision to finish the Premier League and crown these worthy champions.”

Liverpool could also break the Premier League’s most points record before the season is completed.

The current points record is held by City who racked up 100 in the 2017/18 season.

But if Liverpool were to win all their remaining games, they would finish on 107 points so even with a few slip-ups a new record is very much possible.
