Gary Lineker fumes over decision during Liverpool vs Chelsea

Gary Lineker has bemoaned the latest tight offside call to rule out a goal as Liverpool benefited from a VAR decision against Chelsea.

The Reds thought they had gone a goal down halfway through the first half at Anfield when Werner beat Alisson and found the back of the net.

But the goal was straight away cancelled out by VAR due to the finest of margins, something which left known VAR critic Lineker furious.

Lineker tweeted: "I’ll say it again, level is no longer onside, and the game is worse for it."

This is not the first time Lineker has slammed the new VAR interpretation of the offside rule. Last month he offered a longer explanation of his reservations.

"Offside was never a problem before VAR and now it’s forcing radical changes to the laws of the game," he said. "It’s nuts. Utterly nuts. If we must stick with VAR: It’s so obvious whether someone is offside or not with one reply with the line drawn. If it’s not then it’s level. Simple."

The former Everton and England star also mocked Manchester City's disallowed goal against Wolves earlier this week when Aymeric Laporte's effort was denied.

"Level is no longer onside," he tweeted.

He added in reply to a user: "Thought it was inconclusive looking at the replays. The technology is not there yet to determine such borderline decisions."

In further replies, Lineker argued that offsides should only be considered when visible to the human eye, rather than through the current system of using lines to decide fractional calls.

"I dream of VAR saying it's too close to call," he said.
