Gary Lineker explains further Match of the Day absence and confirms his return date

Gary Lineker is yet to make his Match of the Day return following the aftermath of his BBC suspension.

The former Everton, Barcelona and Leicester City striker found himself at the centre of a controversial case last month after likening language around the Government's asylum policy to that of 1930s Germany, which saw him temporarily pulled from the popular football highlights programme.

Fellow pundits such as Alan Shearer and Ian Wright stood in solidarity with Lineker over his tweet, refusing to appear on Match of the Day as a show of support. As a result, the Saturday edition of MOTD on March 11 was reduced to a 20-minute edition with no presenter, commentary or analysis.

An agreement was eventually reached for Lineker to return to the screens of the nation, though he was absent for the first MOTD after being given the go-ahead to reappear due to a bad cold affecting his speech.

With the international break now out of the way, many anticipated seeing the 62-year-old back in the hot seat yesterday evening to dissect Liverpool's defeat by Manchester City and the other six matches that took place on Saturday. The programme was instead hosted by Mark Chapman, a decision unrelated to the events of the past month.

Clearing up any absence-related confusion, Lineker yesterday tweeted: “Just so there’s no misunderstanding, I won’t be doing @BBCMOTD [Match of the Day] tonight. I’m not suspended, just on holiday. Back next week."
