Yesterday the BBC announced that it will be increasing how much license fees cost, and will start charging OAPs for the service, which was previously free.
From April 1 the license fee will go up by £1.50, and will now cost £159 instead of £157.50.
There was a bigger increase last year, when the cost went up from £154.50.
Retweeting the BBC's announcement, the former footballer wrote: "But, but I’ve just taken a pay cut."
Despite the tweet being an obvious attempt at humour, it went down like a lead balloon with some social media users, who hit back at Gary.
Chastising the tweet, one person responded: "I think it’s fair to say you’re not very good at reading the room Lineker."
"That’s lovely Gary. I’ve always liked you but not sure about such a tasteless joke when millions, like me, are watching a lifetime of successful business destroyed while also getting zero help. I’ve had NO INCOME since March 2020 but still have to pay your bloody wages," said another angry social media user.
"Congratulations on winning Twitters most insensitive tweet," bashed somebody else.
"A very bad joke actually offensive," wrote yet another critic.
However, Gary wasn't without his fans.
"Well I thought it was amusing. I also think that the BBC is an incredible bargain and worth every penny. How many of the people whinging about it pay even more Sky and all the other streaming services," said one person, backing him up.
"You do make me smile Gary," praised another.
