Gary Lineker has jokingly tweeted after Robbie Savage's son, Charlie, made his Manchester United debut yesterday evening, claiming: "If he’s got half of his dad's ability then he’ll be absolutely hopeless."
The tongue-in-cheek tweet was sent shortly after Charlie replaced Juan Mata in United's 1-1 draw with Young Boys at Old Trafford.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder, who has risen through the Academy process with the Reds, has already achieved a feat his dad failed to by making a first-team debut for the club.
Father Savage, who spoke to BT Sport before the game and was on co-commentary duty during it, spent time with United as a youngster before forging a professional career elsewhere.
"I’m starting to tear up actually, because what the boy has achieved. Charlie Savage has achieved so much in his young life,'' began Savage Snr.
"When I'm stood on the sidelines people automatically think Charlie is going to be like his dad. He's not like me, he's his own player. I am absolutely delighted.''
Savage, was one of five United academy graduates to step off the bench during the second period at Old Trafford, with Tom Heaton, Teden Mengi, Zidane Iqbal and Shola Shoretire all gaining some minutes.
Mason Greenwood did open the scoring early on with an acrobatic attempt, but his side was pegged back when Fabian Rieder's fine effort flew past Dean Henderson just before the break.
The Reds had already ensured top spot in Group F, and new interim manager Ralf Rangnick opted to take a look at some of his fringe players by making wholesale changes from the side that started the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
As for Savage, he took to social media to celebrate the occasion, posting after the game: "Delighted to have made my first-team debut for Manchester United in the Champions League.
"I would like to thank all the academy staff for their support over the last 14 years and the manager for putting his trust in me tonight."
United next face Norwich City on Saturday evening as they return to Premier League action.
