Gary Lineker delivers promising early verdict on Newcastle record signing Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak has made a 'fabulous start' to his Newcastle United career after netting on his Premier League debut. That is the view of Gary Lineker, who took to social media to praise the Sweden international during the Magpies heartbreaking defeat at Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Isak travelled with Eddie Howe's side for the draw at Wolves on Sunday afternoon, but was unable to make his first appearance in black-and-white due to a delay in being granted a work permit. Newcastle's head coach admitted the 22-year-old was also a doubt ahead of the midweek clash on Merseyside, but the summer signing was eventually cleared to play just hours ahead of kick-off.

Isak capped a stunning first start for the Magpies with the opening goal on Wednesday night, emphatically finding the top corner after being played in on goal by Sean Longstaff. The forward also found the net after the break, only to be ruled offside following a tight VAR call.

Newcastle looked set to earn a point with a spirited performance in the absence of key stars such as Bruno Guimaraes, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson. However, the visitors were left heartbroken after Fabio Carvalho's cruel winner in the 98th minute meant they left empty-handed.

Isak's impressive debut was somewhat overshadowed by the dramatic end to the contest as Howe's side suffered their first defeat of the season. However, former England international and Match of the Day host Lineker was quick to praise the forward for making a confident start to life with the Magpies.

Lineker posted: "Fabulous start for Alexander Isak, giving NUFC the lead at Anfield on his debut." It was a message which was unsurprisingly shared by supporters, judging by the responses.

One fan posted 'the lad could prove another golden boot contender this season'. Another supporter replied 'such a good player! Loved him in the Euros'.
