Gary Lineker criticised over 'disrespectful' comments on New Zealand haka

Gary Lineker  has been branded 'disrespectful' for his comments on the New Zealand Haka.

The All Blacks performed the pre-match dance ahead of their Rugby World Cup clash with Canada on Wednesday.

The Haka was posted on social media by the official World Cup account, with Lineker offering his own verdict.

"Must be so hard not to just laugh at this if you’re the opposition," Lineker posted on Twitter .

His comments drew criticism from other social media users, with the Match of the Day host branded 'disrespectful' before being accused of 'laughing at cultural heritage'.

Piers Morgan was quick to pull Lineker up on his comments, responding: "Harder not to laugh at Spurs, on balance.

"The Haka is one of the greatest spectacles in sport, and of huge cultural importance in New Zealand. Weird that you would mock it."

Former England striker Lineker was quick to reply, adding: "I think it’s fun and totally understand the cultural significance but just don’t think it would intimidate top level sportsmen.

"Their rugby however is another matter entirely."

New Zealand racked up the highest score of this World Cup with a crushing 63-0 victory over Canada.

The two-time defending champion managed to score nine unanswered tries as they laid down a marker to their rivals for the tournament.

The victory takes the All Blacks to second in Pool B, ahead of their next match against Namibia on Sunday.

Head coach Steve Hansen said: "We've just got to take that first 20 minutes of the second half and turn it into 80 minutes. If we can do that, we won't be too far away.

"During that period, the team really came together and played good, controlled rugby.

"In really difficult conditions, the humidity is unbelievable and whilst people at home will be wondering why we dropped a few balls, it's very, very difficult."
