Gary Lineker congratulates Liverpool after conclusion of title race with Man City

Liverpool's Premier League campaign finished in heartbreaking fashion as Jurgen Klopp's side finished behind Manchester City despite beating Wolves 2-0 at Anfield.

The Reds needed a favour from Brighton on the final day to end a 29-year wait for a league title and were given hope when Glenn Murray put the hosts ahead, moments after Sadio Mane had given Liverpool the lead on Merseyside.

However, City fought back to emerge 4-1 victors at the AMEX Stadium and the result meant that Liverpool's result was redundant in the finale, as victory for Pep Guardiola's side guaranteed a second consecutive Premier League title.

Liverpool have plenty to be proud upon following this season and former Everton striker Gary Lineker made that point on Twitter, posting a message following the conclusion of the title race.

"Congratulations to Man City on being the first club to retain the Premier League title for 10 years. A simply magnificent season," he posted on social media.

"Congratulations too to Liverpool. To finish second on 97 points with only one defeat is extraordinary. A simply magnificent season."

Klopp's side will now turn their attention towards the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid on June 1st.
