Gary Lineker compares Man City boss Pep Guardiola to Barcelona great Johan Cruyff

Gary Lineker has compared Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to Barcelona and Netherlands icon Johan Cruyff.

Cruyff became manager of the Spanish giants in 1988 following a spell in charge of Ajax when his illustrious playing career had ended.

The former forward managed Lineker at the Nou Camp and would later coach Guardiola during his playing days.

Guardiola would go on to replicate Cruyff's success as a manager, winning major honours with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Manchester City.

Lineker believes there are similarities between the two legendary coaches.

"I love the way Pep Guardiola has evolved the game," he told the Mail.

"What City do — it's just so clever. You'll see a different formation, a different way, every visit. They take the game on.

"Sometimes Guardiola will do something you think is almost too smart, like at Real Madrid last week, but that reminds me of Johan Cruyff. I was fascinated by his training. He just saw it all differently — off the charts, even when he played me on the wing.

"I had no sympathy for wingers after that. It was simple, just crossing it — but most of the ones I played with had not a Scooby how to even do that.

"Guardiola players are smart, and the best ones are really smart, particularly their spatial awareness."
