Gary Lineker clashes with fellow BBC presenter Simon McCoy in Boris Johnson debate

Fellow BBC presenters Gary Lineker and Simon McCoy have locked digital horns over what they can and cannot say.

Simon, best known as an afternoon news anchor, slammed sports pundit Gary after he tweeted a scathing opinion about Prime Minister Boris Johnson's latest coronavirus briefing.

The briefing was set to be a tense one after Johnson's chief advisor Dominic Cummings travelled across the country to see his parents in Durham - with many claiming this flew in the face of the government's own lockdown rules.

Simon claimed that Gary, as a BBC broadcaster, should subscribe to the broadcaster's own impartiality.

Gary wrote: "Please. Stop. Lying."

Simon came back: "Please. Stop. If you speak for yourself - write a letter.

"If you're speaking for BT Sport - up to you.

"But if you are speaking with your BBC hat on - you are abusing a position which puts BBC journalists in an impossible position."

Gary was having none of it, penning: "Check the rules.

"That only applies to those who work in news or current affairs.

"I speak for me. No one else. Good day."

It's not the first time Gary has lashed out at the government.

When the news broke of Cummings' trip to Durham, he tweeted: "Rules are made to be broken. Hard therefore not to conclude that lockdown is broken."

Another tweet read: "Not sure how this Dom com will end.

"This, though, should not be about what party you support. It shouldn't be about whether you're leave or remain.

"None of that should matter one iota. This is about right and wrong. This is about the truth. This is about trust."
